I spent 2 years trying to figure out whether to go the adoption or breeder route to find a therapy dog, and after doing lots of research on ethical breeders, I was pleased to find Cavaliers of Healdsburg! YES, ethical breeders exist, and Shelley is the definition of ethical breeders. Here’s why: before I signed any paperwork, got on a waitlist and paid money, I visited Shelley’s home to see where the puppies were growing up and how they were being taken care of. I appreciated the spaciousness that all of Shelley’s beautiful dogs get in her big yard but also her home. All of her dogs and puppies are taken care of right in her living room! She only breeds a few puppies per year (hence the almost year-long wait) and every single puppy is given SO MUCH LOVE. Her dogs are healthy and happy, and anybody who visits will see that right away. Best of all, she screens and interviews ALL applicants. She truly cares and is committed to giving these dogs awesome and stable homes. When it was finally my turn, I got to see my puppy grow up before my very eyes thanks to Shelley’s live-stream of the puppy’s area ALL DAY. This is why I can attest to the fact that Shelley doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks it too. People are blown away by the beauty and temperament of my dog, and always ask where I got him. If you’re looking for a Cavalier who is loved and cared for from the moment they’re born (which is KEY to raising a truly well-behaved dog) then call Shelley.”

We sought out Shelley because we wanted a cavalier specifically, as we learned they are excellent companion animals for children with sensory needs. “I had researched the kind of dog I wanted since we had kids and found that Cavaliers would do well for our family. I luckily found Cavaliers of Healdsburg and got two of the most wonderful puppies! I was so impressed with Shelley and how she took care of the puppies. They lived in her house with her family and had a whole area set up for them to play. We met their mom and saw how sweet she is. You could tell right away that the puppies were well loved, trained and people friendly. Our two boys have always been gentle, kind and loving. Even though that is characteristic of the breed I attribute a lot of it to the wonderful beginning they had in life. We had a dog that heartbreakingly died very young and later we found out it was from a puppy mill. Devastated but determined, we did extensive research before going with Shelley and have obviously been thrilled with our decision. I have recommended her to many. We now potentially want to get a second puppy and Shelley has been very forthcoming that this may take a while. She’s a mindful breeder and these things can’t be rushed if done right but it’s well worth the wait to have a healthy well-adjusted pet.”
